Shire of Boyup Brook’s ‘game changing’ water supply project receives funding

Water supply will be bolstered in the Boyup Brook region with the addition of six water tanks across several key sites.

The $151,805 project — funded by the State and Federal governments under the Community Water Supplies Partnership program — will help the community adapt to changing climate conditions, boosting water supply for fire emergencies and focusing on sustainable irrigation.

Three 88,000-litre water tanks will be installed at Mayanup, Kulikup and Tonebridge to fight fires, while three 247,874-litre water tanks will be installed at Flax Mill Caravan Park precinct for emergency water and irrigation.

The new infrastructure is said to reduce reliance on scheme water and support emergency water needs. It comes after the region struggled with water access last summer.

Water Minister Simone McGurk said the funding underscores the State Government’s commitment to helping regional communities build water resilience amid climate challenges.

“By providing sustainable water solutions, we’re safeguarding vital water resources for firefighting, drought resilience and the community while reducing dependence on scheme water,” she said.

“These important funding investments are not just about water, they are about securing the future of regional WA communities.”

A 30 per cent cash or in-kind co-contribution was provided by the Shire of Boyup Brook to fund the project.

WA Senator Varun Ghosh said supporting the new community water projects would help safeguard water resources that communities, industries and environments rely on.

“That’s why the Federal Government is partnering with the State Government to invest in water projects that will help us to adapt to changing climate conditions and that seek to futureproof the water supply for the next generation,” he said.

Member for Warren-Blackwood Jane Kelsbie said the funding would be a game changer for the community.
