Notch Has ‘Basically Announced Minecraft 2’ on Social Media

Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, best known for creating Minecraft, has written a lengthy post on social media explaining how he has ‘basically announced Minecraft 2’.

The comment comes almost fifteen years after he produced the first working version of Minecraft, a feat that took little more than a week in 2009. On

, Notch explained that the game might never see the light of day and he doesn’t ‘super duper care’ which game he makes, but he ‘(does) know (he’s) making one’.

In his words, it could be a spiritual successor to Minecraft.

Minecraft 2, Two Decades Later

The first iteration of Minecraft, released in 2009, is now known as the Java Edition – Notch pieced it together in just a few days, and it eventually became a powerhouse of the gaming world worth billions of dollars. For the longest time, fans have wondered what comes next, but since

acquired the label, nothing more than a few spin-off titles have emerged.

Minecraft 2? Perhaps Notch wants to take control of that one.

On social media,

I basically announced minecraft 2.

I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that’s super similar to the first one, and I’m loving working on games again.

I don’t super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I’m making one, so I figured I’d absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to minecraft and put up a poll about it.

He went on to explain that spiritual successors are ‘tragic’ and ‘washed up’ but he’s willing to do what people want if they’re open to stumping up the cash for a new product.

Notch also assured fans that his game wouldn’t infringe on ‘the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that

is successfully doing’.

However, further down in the comments under his post, Notch was transparent:

Honestly, I’m not even sure I’ll make it to release, based on having been me for all my life.

But I do know I’m genuinely loving having fun working on a game in an office and would love to give it a shot.
