Step Aside Starfield, 2023’s Best Space-based Third Person Shooter Just Got Better

Bethesda’s Starfield was supposed to be its crowning achievement in 2023. After the acquisition from

, it’s the first game from the developers that is exclusive to the Xbox (for now). However, it fell short of many expectations, leaving a void for fans of games set in space.

To make up for the lackluster performance of the Xbox exclusive, fans have been looking for other titles with a similar setting and vibe. Well, these gamers found refuge in a game that was released a little before Starfield but offered players a much better experience, one that is now improved further.

The Fort Solis performance update will breathe new life into the game.

With technology evolving at the pace that it does, developers are constantly working to optimize not just new projects but also previously released titles. The mark of a good developer is when their game receives consistent and substantial support to ensure the player base is happy to spend their time and money on their creation.

So, when Fallen Leaf Studios announced Fort Solis was getting a performance update, fans were eager to once again experience the story with greater refinement. The announcement for the update was made through the studio’s X/

handle, and it links to the game’s Steam page detailing the improvements included in the update.

No game is perfect, and the same goes for Fort Solis. The developers were aware of some issues plaguing the community and have worked to resolve as many as possible. The game is heavy on atmosphere and immersion so even small bugs can reduce the impact of key story moments.

The performance patch includes general performance optimizations and improvements. AMD users can now make use of their FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 for even better graphics and visual effects. Players can also toggle on/off the walk speed, and they fix the issue with crashes occurring on loading saves.

Fort Solis has all the atmosphere and ambiance that Starfield lacked.

A mystery/thriller game at heart, Fallen Leaf brings a solid gaming experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome. That’s one of the few criticisms fans have of the game; it gets over too soon. James Tinsdale, creator and game director, shared his inspiration for the game and even the potential for a sequel in an exclusive interview with FandomWire.

While the title is not the most recent, it is undoubtedly a must-play for people who enjoy sci-fi and horror. The developers have managed to capture the oppressive and isolating feeling of being in space with limited resources or human contact in a highly nuanced manner.

Fort Solis was a refreshing title to experience in 2023, especially after the slew of cookie-cutter action games. Being narrative-driven, many felt the title ended up feeling a little too much like a walking simulator, and you can find many such critiques in the Steam reviews.

However, Fallen Leaf can weave a compelling story and soon becomes difficult to put down. Roger Clark, Julia Brown, and Troy Baker deliver great performances, further adding to the game’s immersion. Have you played Fort Solis yet? Let us know in the comments!
