The “mass casualty incident” unfolded on Canal and Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, the city’s vibrant historic centre, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to the city’s official disaster preparedness agency, NOLA Ready.

“The 8th District is currently working a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd… There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS (New Orleans Emergency Medical Services) and 10 fatalities,” it said.

“Public safety partners are responding on scene. Updates will follow as they are received.”

The injured have been taken to five hospitals across the city including University Medical Center, Touro Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center Jefferson Campus and Ochsner ******** Campus.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell labelled the incident a “terrorist attack”, noting it is still under investigation.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry called the incident a “horrific act of violence” and asked for prayers for victims and first responders.

“I urge all near the scene to avoid the area,” he wrote on X.
