‘A widespread snowstorm’ is one of several possibilities in Evansville this weekend

EVANSVILLE – It could be an interesting start to 2025 – and it’s “usually not good when a meteorologist says the weather looks interesting.”

That’s according to a bulletin National Weather Service Senior Meteorologist Derrick Snyder sent to media outlets Tuesday morning. The issue is a potential winter storm system that could sweep through the Evansville area on Sunday.

As of now, forecasters aren’t sure what will happen. But there are three possibilities, Snyder said:

Rain, with some icing issues primarily north of Interstate 64

Slight freezing rain mixed with accumulating sleet and snow

“It’s just too early to start pinning down specific precipitation types or amounts,” Snyder wrote. “Things will become clearer in the next few days.”

Still, “the possibility of travel impacts of some kind look to be increasing,” he said.

A bulletin from the National Weather Service lays out the myriad possibilities for a winter storm system that could sweep through the Evansville area on Sunday.

The Paducah, Kentucky office of the NWS also has temperatures plunging from the unseasonably highs of the last few days to more usual winter fare. By New Year’s Day, the high will struggle to get above freezing with a few flurries throughout the day. By the weekend, lows could drop into the teens.

That will include single-digit or sub-zero wind chills, Snyder said. And beyond this weekend, NWS can’t rule out “clipper systems” ushering in light snow.

Evansville residents should also expect strong winds Tuesday into Wednesday, with gusts as strong as 40 miles per hour. Those may cause issues due to all the recent rain.

“With the very soggy soils, we wouldn’t be shocked if we have issues with uprooted trees in addition to small limbs down and flying holiday decor,” Snyder wrote.
