Police: Coach beats referee over ‘bad call’ during youth basketball game in Lancaster County

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A coach is wanted on charges that accuse him of assaulting a referee over an alleged “bad call” during a youth basketball game, police say.

Jomo Belfor, 41, of New York, disagreed with a foul call a referee made, and he allegedly head-butted the referee and proceeded to beat them, according to the charges filed Monday by East Hempfield Township Police.

The referee suffered a ****** and blue eye, a chipped tooth and a bloody lip from the assault that happened just after 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 22, police said in the charges.

After the call, Belfor began arguing with the referee who gave him a technical foul and asked for security to get Belfor to leave.

Police said that’s when Belfor then head butted the ref, and then punched him. People in the crowd then began to rush the court and also pushed the ref.

The assault was captured on video and posted onto TikTok, and was later shown to police. Belfor was seen on the video ripping the ball out of the ref’s hands during an argument, then allegedly assaulting the ref.

An arrest warrant was issued for Belfor who faces a misdemeanor charge of assault on sports official, along with summary counts of harassment and disorderly conduct to engage in fighting.
