Boxing Day Test: Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal given out on review following DRS controversy

Controversy erupted in the final session of the Boxing Day Test as Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was given out by the third umpire, despite contradicting DRS evidence.

Jaiswal was forced to depart for 84 after the third umpire deemed there was a deflection off the opener’s gloves upon review by *********** captain Pat Cummins, who also bowled the delivery.

That was confirmed by video review. However, Snicko did not appear to show any spike as it passed Jaiswal.

Regardless, the third umpire deemed the video evidence was enough to overturn the on-field decision.

Jaiswal tried to argue his case before he left the crease but *********** Test legend Ricky Ponting was having none of it.

“It clearly hit the glove. And I caught it at the time, Jaiswal actually started to walk,” Ponting told Seven.

“As soon as the Aussies went upstairs he started to take a couple of steps away.

“Snicko hasn’t proven it to be correct, but the umpire picked up the deflection and froze it where the ball was on the end of the glove.

“As far as I’m concerned, there is no argument whatsoever.”

Test great Justin Langer said it would be a big talking point at the end of the Test match, with the fall of Jaiswal’s wicket putting India seven down and without a recognised batter, attempting to hold on for victory in the final session.

“While it looked like it came off the face of the bat and glove, the Snicko said it didn’t,” Langer told Seven.

“This is going to be controversial.”

Former international cricket umpire Simon Taufel said the “correct decision” was made.

“In my view the decision was out. The third umpire did make the correct decision in the end.

“With the technology protocols, we do have a hierarchy of redundancy and when the umpire sees a clear deflection off the bat there is no need to go any further and use any other form of technology to prove the case.

“The clear deflection is conclusive evidence. In this particular case what we have seen from the third umpire, is they’ve used a secondary form of technology, which for whatever reason hasn’t shown the same conclusive evidence of audio to back up the clear deflection.

“In the end, the third umpire did the right thing and went back to the clear deflection and overturned the umpire on-field.”
