Greece 1-0 down to Spain after Maria Sakkari flop

Spain have taken a 1-0 lead over Greece in their United Cup clash after Jessica Bouzas Maneiro crushed world No.32 Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-1 in 72 minutes.

A shoulder injury meant Sakkari hadn’t played since retiring hurt in the first round at the US Open in late August, and the rust was clear to see at Perth’s RAC Arena on Saturday night.

Sakkari cut a frustrated figure as her unforced errors continued to build.

In contrast, world No.54 Bouzas Maneiro looked unstoppable as she bounced back from Friday’s straight sets loss to Elena Rybakina in grand style.

Bouzas Maneiro sealed the win with a floating backhander down the line.

“I’m super happy with my performance today. Yesterday was tough for me. But I feel well today,” Bouzas Maneiro said.

“It’s my second match here, so it was worse for her (Sakkari) maybe to play her first match.

“Yesterday I lost and I was a little bit sad, but my team supported me so much.”

The result means world No.11 Stefanos Tsitsipas must beat Pablo Carreno Busta to keep the tie alive.
