The Illuminate Are Using The Same Devastating Strategy To Destroy Super Earth That Ancient Rome Used To Defeat Pyrrhus

The Omens of Tyranny update in Helldivers 2 officially kicked off the Illumiante’s invasion. It was revealed that a small cell of Illuminate forces from the First Galactic War survived and now, they have come out of hiding to take their revenge. This new enemy faction is quite overpowered but the community has noticed that the Illuminate is not taking over planets, they are only launching attacks and in the end, Helldivers manage to slow them down.

In hindsight, it may seem like Super Earth is winning here but the Illuminate might be playing the long game here. What Super Earth is winning right now can be called Pyrrhic victories. This phrase relates to Pyrrhus, a king of Epirus who defeated the Romans in 279 BCE but lost many of his troops. The Illuminate may be using the same strategy that the Romans used to defeat Pyrrhus of Epirus.

Illuminate is not taking over planets in Helldivers 2

The Illuminate’s invasion has begun, but they have not invaded any planets so far. It’s certainly odd that the faction has been plotting its attack for so many years and now, they are not taking over Super Earth’s territories. It’s becoming apparent that the Illuminate is using the same strategy that the Romans used against Pyrrhus of Epirus.

By luring Super Earth into costly battles, the enemy faction is encouraging Super Earth to exhaust its resources and manpower on these Pyrrhic victories. Basically, the Illuminate is letting Helldivers win these battles but in reality, they have released only a few of its forces while Super Earth is sending all its soldiers to the frontline. Their elongated plan might be something much greater than this and when the time comes, Super Earth will not be prepared.

Players are having a hard time taking down these new Illuminate enemies, but the worst is yet to come. It has been confirmed by game director Mikael Eriksson in an interview with

that this is not the full faction. Eriksson has also confirmed that this Illuminate Vanguard Fleet is following guerrilla tactics and that is why they are not capturing planets.

Eriksson also named the type of Stratagems that will help players in taking out Illuminate forces: Anti-Tank Stratagems. The director of the game has clearly highlighted the best type of Stratagems for these missions but still, many players are using the wrong Stratagems.

Arrowhead Game Studios’ plan to revive Helldivers 2 has worked out perfectly. The game was on the brink of death after the release of the Escalation of Freedom update, which was labeled as the epitome of everything wrong with Arrowhead’s approach to game design. The Omens of Tyranny did a great job at boosting Helldivers 2‘s popularity but will this Illuminate lore be engaging enough to keep the players hooked? Only time will tell.
