Steam’s Masterstroke Move Effectively Checkmates Studios Like Activision From Releasing 100+ GB Games Like ****** Ops 6

Ever since Steam evolved from providing Valve games to becoming the biggest platform for third-party games and gamers, it’s been a household name in the gaming industry.

Over the years, Gabe Newell and Valve have brought various features to the platform to ease the lives of gamers. However, now, the company has brought another massive change to its platform that puts an end to gaming studios such as Activision, releasing hundreds of gigabytes of useless updates.

It seems like Steam can’t stop giving players a better gaming experience. While companies such as Epic Games and Ubisoft continue to shoot themselves in the foot with their terrible launchers, Valve keeps bringing various updates to Steam that make the platform way more usable.

Steam has now

testing new settings for game updates in the Steam Client Beta. Anyone can opt into this, and it means that it will soon be available to everyone around the globe. These new settings give you control over when and what Steam downloads when it comes to game updates.

The new settings can be viewed in the “Downloads” tab on the Steam client. Players can choose the default option to let Steam choose when to update the game, and it’s based on various factors, such as when you last played the title, the available bandwidth, and multiple other factors, or wait to download the update until the game is launched.

You can allow certain title overrides by choosing “Game Properties” on games in your library. These overrides will be viewable in the downloads section right under “Manage Exceptions.”

Why has Valve gone for these updates? Well, a company that’s dedicated to gamers has obviously taken notice of the growing sizes of modern-day games such as ****** Ops 6, Ark: Survival Evolved, and many more, whose 100+ GB updates cause significant storage and bandwidth issues.

Steam users have spent a small time enjoying new games in 2024

Gamers can finally view the 2024 Steam Replay, which gives an insight into individual users’ statistics on the platform. This shows gamers the various games and genres they’ve spent countless hours on, as well as other crucial details.

When we take a look at the global side of things, things get quite interesting. Only 15% of the time spent playing on Valve’s service was towards games released in 2024. It wasn’t like players were jumping to 2023 hits either, as only 47% of the total time was spent on games that were released in the last seven years.

15% seems quite awful, but it’s an actual increase for new games in comparison to previous years on Valve’s service. In 2023, the majority of gamers spent their time playing old classics, and just 9% of playtime was dedicated to titles that debuted in 2023.

The playtime for new games in 2024 barely missed 2022’s record, which saw 17% of playtime on 2022 debuts and just 19% on all games that were released between one and seven years old.

However, let’s not forget that Valve has a huge catalog of games on its platform, and the regular sales help boost old games. While we see tons of new releases every year, there aren’t many of them to make a dent when hundreds of games that came out in this decade have been on Valve’s platform for years.

With that said, would you like to see any other feature on Steam? Let us know in the comments below.
