Todd Howard’s Rumored Elder Scrolls 2025 Project Effectively Dooms One of the Greatest Upcoming ES Mods

It’s been more than a decade since Bethesda visited its legendary RPG franchise with the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Although it still serves a healthy player base despite its age, gamers are looking forward to the Elder Scrolls 6.

It’s expected that the main entry in the RPG franchise won’t hit the shelves until 2026 or even later. However, Todd Howard and his team might be bringing an Oblivion remake in 2025. While gamers are excited, this unexpected remake will prove to be a disaster for the upcoming Elder Scrolls mod, Skyblivion.

, Bethesda’s internal documents from 2020 surfaced online, revealing that there might be an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake or remaster in the works.

However, there was no official announcement, and no one ever knew if this project would ever come to fruition. It seems like we’re going to get some news soon.

New rumors reveal that Oblivion‘s remake might be announced at an upcoming Xbox Direct event that’s set to be held in January 2025. What’s even more exciting is that the remake might hit the shelves sometime in 2025.

It’s not surprising that Oblivion is getting the remake treatment. Back when it debuted in 2006, it was leagues ahead of its competition and brought players vast and detailed fantasy adventures, something we’d never seen before. Heck, many fans even argued that Todd Howard’s magnum opus, Skyrim, was a step down from the game.

It’s great to see that Elder Scrolls fans are finally getting a new game, even if it’s a remake. However, now that we have an official remake on the way, what’s going to happen with Skyblivion?

If you’re unaware, Skyblivion is a total conversion mod for Skyrim that was supposed to turn the title into Oblivion. It’s been in development since 2012, and the fan-made remaster was supposed to drop in 2025 as well. Even though its gameplay so far looks promising, there’s no way it can keep up with an official remake from Bethesda itself.

Things might not look good for Skyblivion, but let’s not forget that it will be absolutely free. It’s being made by a group of dedicated fans who care about the franchise and won’t make the questionable decisions that Bethesda is known for in recent years.

Elder Scrolls 6 Needs to learn from CD Projekt Red and The Witcher 4

One of the long-anticipated games, which recently treated gamers with a trailer, is The Witcher 4. The title’s cinematic trailers didn’t reveal an inch of the gameplay yet introduced players to the world, story, and playable character they can expect to see in the game when it eventually releases.

The Witcher 4‘s trailer was just focusing on telling gamers about the core themes of the game through Ciri’s presence as a protagonist. It’s an incredible way to avoid any kind of spoilers while still building hype for the game that’s probably years away from release.

The Elder Scrolls 6, just like The Witcher 4, is in a similar production state. Bethesda can learn from CD Projekt Red. Howard and his team don’t need to release a trailer that gives players a look at the half-baked game for the sake of being hyped.

By following The Witcher 4‘s example, the next Elder Scrolls game can showcase a self-contained story that fills players with relevant information about the title they’ve been expecting for years.

It’s mind-boggling how it’s been six years since the announcement of the title, and we still don’t know a shred about its timeline, setting, characters, and themes.
