Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Indian spin star Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from international cricket

Indian spin champion Ravichandran Ashwin has called time on his decorated cricket career, retiring for all formats effective immediately.

In the wake of India’s rain-affected draw at the Gabba on Wednesday that leaves the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series with Australia tied at 1-1, the off-spinner declared he was retiring from all formats of international cricket.

The 38-year-old ends his Test career with a remarkable 537 Test wickets at 24 from his 106 outings for India, the last of which was in the pink-ball Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval.

Ashwin also has 156 On-Day International wickets to his name and has represented India in T20s.

“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at international level,” he declared during the post-match press conference alongside skipper Rohit Sharma.

“I do feel like there’s a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket, but this will be the last day.

“I have had a lot of fun and created a lot of memories alongside Rohit and several of my other teammates… and we’re some of the last OGs, I think I could say.

“It’s a truly very emotional moment.”

The superstar declined to answer questions but hinted fans had not seen the last of him, with his love for cricket running deep.

Ashwin was also spotted chatting to friendly *********** rival Nathan Lyon during the final day in Brisbane.

Lyon sits four wickets behind Ashwin and has expressed his admiration for the Indian star on numerous occasions.
