Gulet Ahmed jailed over ****** that killed 16yo Katherine Osborne

A driver responsible for the horror ****** that killed Melbourne teenager Katherine Osborne has been jailed for his “appalling” decision to get behind the wheel.

The 16-year-old girl’s life was cut short just before midday on March 11 last year, when a heavily intoxicated Gulet Mohammed Ahmed ran a red light at more than twice the speed limit and crashed into her parents’ car at Carlton.

Ms Osborne was sitting in the back seat and suffered fatal injuries.

Her parents Alexandra and Michael, and two pedestrians, Travis Oliver and Jeffrey Broussard, were also injured.

Bystanders pulled an erratic and aggressive Ahmed from his car, with the 40-year-old assaulting one man and yelling “f —k police bastards” before he was subdued.

The County Court of Victoria was told Ahmed was found to be almost four times the alcohol limit and had also consumed methamphetamines.

Emotional statements from both of Ms Osborne’s parents were heard during an earlier proceeding in October.

Alexandra Osborne told the court at the time she struggles to live day-to-day without her daughter.

“I am furious that all of the effort of raising her from a baby to an adolescent, all that love nurturing and care, has ended in the most abrupt and cruel way,” she said.

“It was a violent end for someone who was exceptional, kind and gentle.”

Her father Michael Osborne said Katherine would have turned 18 this year and been preparing to go off to university.

“The reason tells me it’s not my fault, (but) my heart tells me I failed my number-one duty as a father — to keep my child from harm,” he said.

“She was such a good kid all her life — intelligent, friendly, sharp-witted, beautiful, artistic and athletically gifted.

“She could have gone on to do anything she wanted to.”

The court was told police had first been alerted to Ahmed more than 10 minutes before the ******, when a member of the public reported he was speeding and swerving across lanes in Flemington.

A short time later he ran a red light in Parkville and collided with another car but fled the scene.

Ahmed was travelling at an estimated 103km/h in a 40km/h zone when he collided with the Osborne’s Alpha Romeo.

The court was told had a history of dangerous and alcohol-affected driving dating back more than 15 years, and was jailed for eight years in 2012 after breaking into a home while armed with a baseball bat.

After his release, the court was told, Ahmed had attempted to turn over a new leaf and opened a panelbeating business, but fell back into drug use during Covid lockdowns.

A psychiatrist had later opined he was possibly in a drug-induced psychosis at the time of the ******.

CCTV footage shows the moment killer driver Gulet Mohammed Ahmed crashed into the car carrying Katherine Osborne and her parents on Lygon St and Elgin St intersection in Carlton, killing the 16-year-old.

Judge Anne Hassan sentenced Ahmed to 14 years and nine months in jail, saying he was a “grave danger” and there was “an inevitability” to the tragic consequences of his behaviour.

Judge Hassan said Katherine’s parents had provided the court with “profoundly moving accounts” of the young woman’s life.

“It’s important to stress at the outset that no sentence I impose can undo the tragic events of (that day),” Judge Hassan said.

“No sentence I impose can relive the suffering of Katherine’s parents.

“I must be careful not to allow the devastating effects of your offending and the enormous sorrow they have caused to swamp all other sentencing considerations.”

Ahmed pleaded guilty to 22 charges including culpable driving causing death and reckless conduct endangering persons.

He will be eligible for parole in December 2033.
