Despite the game’s huge popularity, the community was shocked to see that the game has actually seen the lowest player count in years. Apex Legends was considered in the same bracket as Fortnite, Warzone, and PUBG. As PUBG has fallen short of continuing its dominance, it seems the EA title is following the same. A few months ago, it wasn’t that bad considering an all-time peak isn’t going to hold up for long as the game recorded 130,509 concurrent players in the last 24 hours. But the situation has gotten even worse, as there are only over 59k players right now. That’s a depletion of over 80%, which is a matter of grave concern for Respawn Entertainment.

There are many reasons for the downfall of this game such as bad matchmaking, over-infestation of bugs, cheaters, fatigue, and many more. But the real reason for this substantially low player count is the change in the Battle Pass.

An updated Apex Legends Battle Pass system for Season 22 was unveiled on July 8th by EA and Respawn Entertainment. Due to the initial changes made to the Battle Pass, each season would have two Battle Passes instead of a single one, and neither could be bought with Apex Coins, the premium in-game currency.

Consequently, Apex Coins from the previous Battle Pass could not be used for the upcoming Season. During the first two weeks of launch, EA clarified that players could complete a series of challenges to unlock the first half of Season 22’s Premium Battle Pass rewards, but they did not provide any additional information at that time.

This change in Battle Pass stirred huge controversy in the game. After around two weeks, Respawn realized its mistake and went on to revert all the Battle Pass changes. However, it was too late as players had already started leaving the game, and the major damage was already done to a fine game.

Actually, there were several reasons for Apex Legends to stumble hard even after having some glorious years. The overcrowding genre initially was never a reason for this game to fail; however, that issue, later on, posed a big problem for the game.

Fans started feeling burnt out after playing the same game again and again, without any actual innovation in the in-game content. And the availability of new games like XDefiant or new content in Warzone also steered players away from Apex Legends.

Now, it’s up to Respawn Entertainment to hear from the community about what it actually wants, unlike Concord, which never cared about its fans. Then the company needs to fix those persisting issues if it wants to fetch its lost glory days.
