Guha apologises over Bumrah ‘primate’ reference

Isa Guha has apologised for inadvertently referring to India star Jasprit Bumrah as “primate” in Fox Sports commentary during the Gabba Test.

The former England bowler attracted criticism on social media during play on Sunday, on a day where the quick again carried India with the ball with another five-wicket haul.

“Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah,” Guha said on day two of play.

Guha, who is of Indian heritage, is one of the game’s biggest names in cricket broadcast.

She opened Monday’s broadcast by issuing an apology for using the term, which can carry negative racial connotations.

“Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways,” Guha said, while sat beside India cricket legend Ravi Shastri.

“I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect of others.

“If you listen to the full transcript I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players. And someone that I admire greatly.

“I’m an advocate for equality and someone who has spent their career thinking about inclusion and understanding in the game.

“I was trying to frame the enormity of his achievement and I’ve chosen the wrong word. For that I am deeply sorry.

“As someone who is also of south Asian heritage I hope people would recognise there was no other intention or malice there.

“I hope this hasn’t overshadowed what has been a great Test match so far. I am really, really sorry.”

Shastri said the matter should be considered closed, and suggested it had not been a talking point for India’s players.

“Brave woman to do it on live television and apologise, it takes some steel,” Shastri said.

“As far as I am concerned, game over. People are entitled to make mistakes, we are all human.

“Sometimes when you have the mic in your hand, things can happen. But to own up and say sorry, takes courage. She has done it, let’s move on.

“As far as the Indian team, there is a Test match going on. They would like to focus on the game that is taking place.”
