Samantha Alwan, a 29-year-old from Lubbock who worked as a firefighter in Plainview, was pronounced dead at the scene of the ****** that was reported about 6:05 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 27 near County Road 5100 in north Lubbock County, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety. But the driver of a second vehicle that was engulfed in flames was not immediately identified, according to officials. Investigators believe a 2014 Ford Escape with an unknown male driver was traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 27 when it collided head-on with a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Alwan was driving in the left northbound lane. The Ford caught on fire. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries suffered from the ******. There were no other occupants in either vehicle. Troopers are currently investigating the cause of the ****** and working to determine the identity of the driver killed in the ******. Alwan was wearing a seatbelt, according to the DPS statement. It was unclear if the other driver was wearing a seatbelt. The Plainview Fire Department shared a statement mourning Alwan’s passing. “It is with a heavy heart and deep sadness that we share the loss of Firefighter Alwan who tragically passed away this morning. Firefighter Alwan was a dedicated, brave, and selfless individual who always put others first. She served our community with unwavering courage and commitment, and her loss is felt deeply by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with Firefighter Alwan’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. She will be remembered not only for her heroism but for the compassion, kindness, and strength She brought to our team and the communityYou will never be forgotten.” Lubbock Fire Rescue also shared a statement, describing Alwan as a Lubbock native and graduate of the Wolfforth Fire Academy who was a “devoted firefighter who served the Plainview community with honor and pride.” “Please keep the Plainview Fire Department and Alwan in your prayers during this difficult time,” LFR’s statement continues.
