The game was a shift from Call of Duty‘s traditional World War II setting as it was set in the modern world, however, two particular missions took players back in time: All Ghillied Up and One Shot, One Kill. All Ghillied Up was the franchise’s first mission that focused on stealth gameplay (Image via Activision) Undoubtedly, the All Ghillied Up is one of the most iconic missions in Call of Duty history. The game takes players back in time as it is a flashback of one of Captain Price’s earlier missions as a Lieutenant. Set in Pripyat, Ukraine in 1996, the player (Captain Price) and Captain MacMillan make their way through Pripyat in ghillie suits, allowing players to deal with enemies stealthily. Mohammad Alavi, the designer of All Ghillied Up, once explained the development process of the first stealth-centric mission in the series. One of the most iconic missions in Call of Duty history was initially opposed by some developers Up until Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty games were known for their action but with Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward wanted to switch things up and experiment with new ideas. Steve Fukuda, one of Modern Warfare‘s lead designers, was the first one to come up with the concept of the All Ghillied Up mission, however, no one at Infinity Ward was digging the idea. Mohammad Alavi, a member of Modern Warfare‘s development team at Infinity Ward, once explained to This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up how no one at IW, including him, liked the idea of a stealth mission, Nobody thought it was cool, including myself – I always liked the more bombastic missions and this was the opposite of that. And I was finishing up cargo ship and [Fukuda] couldn’t find anybody who wanted to make this level. Not everyone opposed the idea as level designer Preston Glenn began working on the mission’s layout, building its 3D geometry, and crafting routes and locations but Alavi was still not convinced. Mohammad Alavi secretly worked on the mission The mission perfectly showcased how ghillie suits are used to sneak past enemies (Image via Activision) When Fukuda carefully explained the concept of the ghillie suit and how it would impact the overall gameplay, Alavi was somewhat convinced, however, AI, at the time, was never designed to not see the players. Alavi explained how he began working on the mission secretly because the AI programmer would’ve trashed the idea, It was war all the time – The AI was never designed to not see you. So I was like, ‘We can fake this.’ But I don’t like doing that because you can see through it instantly, right? I was like, ‘Or, I can make this Metal Gear Solid style. I can make this the best stealth mission in a Call of Duty game.’ And without telling anybody, because I knew they were going to try to stop me, that’s what I tried to do. Later, with the help of an AI programmer, the enemies’ view cone was shortened. Alavi then spent the next two months, adjusting the view cones on different parts of the map. Alavi called it, “a couple of simple things ballooned into almost 20,000 lines of poorly written script,” but the result was spectacular. The mission also carefully captures the dynamic between Captain Price and Captain MacMillan, an iconic character who never made it to the Modern Warfare reboot. All Ghillied Up was a massive shift from what Call of Duty was known for at the time as it was the first time players were asked to not shoot the enemy, making stealth the only approach.
