Karratha Gas Plant: Roger Cook backs in plan to run North West Shelf LNG for decades

Premier Roger Cook has backed plans to keep the Karratha Gas Plant’s running for decades as the clock ticks on a Federal Government decision about the facility’s future.

Woodside Energy and partners in the North West Shelf Venture want to keep the giant LNG hub operating until 2070. It will be the likely site to process gas from the huge Browse field, in what would be a $30 billion project.

Environment Minister Reece Whitby gave State approval on Thursday — with the final call now in the hands of Federal Minister Tanya Plibersek.

Activists and lobbyists moved swiftly to pile pressure onto Ms Plibersek, with a decision due in 30 business days.

Mr Cook said extending the 40-year-old plant’s life would help provide gas for the State’s trading partners to cut their emissions. He said the fuel would also be needed in Western Australia to smooth power generation and for industrial purposes.

“We know that it’s going to be an important part of what we do in the future to maintain our standard of living and to maintain our prosperity,” the Premier said.

He also touted the State’s plans to switch off Government-owned coal power assets by the end of the decade.

“We are the only state in Australia that will be out of coal by 2030 coal is roughly double the emissions of gas, and so getting coal out of the system is the first significant step in making sure that we reduce emissions and reduce the impact on climate.”

But environmentalists are deeply concerned about the impact of the carbon emissions on climate change.

Greenpeace chief David Ritter labelled the plant “one of the most climate-wrecking and polluting fossil fuel projects in the country”.

“Our world is on a knife edge. The future of everything we care about is at stake in decisions like this one,” he said.

Development of Browse will require another round of State and Federal approvals for development offshore.
