Dual-naming unveiled for Shire of Augusta-Margaret River ‘Yiradjinda’ campground attractions

Efforts to recognise the region’s cultural custodians continues, with local caravan parks dual-named this week.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River confirmed a new Wadandi brand for the campgrounds under the local government’s control as well as new names and signs for the Turner and Flinders Bay caravan parks as well as the shire-run site at Alexandra Bridge.

The rebrand comes with its own website for campgrounds called Yiradjinda, a Wadandi phrase translating as “under the stars”.

Shire president Julia Meldrum said the project to develop the new overarching holiday parks brand occurred in collaboration with the Wadandi-run Undalup Association as part of the shire’s Jenna Yen Mundamung/Walking Together strategy.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the local Wadandi cultural custodians for sharing their rich knowledge and culture with us and believe Yiradjinda provides an opportunity to continue our journey together and deepen the experience for visitors staying in our beautiful parks on Wadandi Boodja,” she said.

“At its heart, Yiradjinda is about connecting to and looking after the beautiful environment we all call home.

“It brings together the existing history and charm of the parks and intertwines cultural knowledge that encourages people to take notice of the flora and fauna around them.”

Ms Meldrum said she was excited to endorse a message of unity, connection and shared responsibility for the environment to the region’s visitors through the new brand.

She said each park would retain its existing name while adding the new Wadandi moniker as had already occurred at other shire-run buildings.

Turner Holiday Park would also be Nala Watajelup Keelip “Our River Mouth Camp” with Flinders dual-named as Nala Waartu Keelip meaning “Our Ocean Camp” and Alexandra Bridge Campground becomes Nala Boonur Keelip “Our Tree Camp”.
