With Dwindling Player Count, Overwatch 2 Must Go Batsh*t Crazy on One Feature To Survive Marvel Rivals

Right upon its initial reveal, NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals was projected to be the “Overwatch 2 Killer”. It was yet another hero-shooter, but the fact that it had a cast of iconic Marvel heroes, fun gameplay mechanics, and non-predatory monetization practices immediately grabbed players’ attention.

Now that NetEase’s hero-shooter is finally out in the wild, the early predictions are coming to fruition. Gamers are jumping ship from Overwatch 2 to Marvel Rivals, despite the fact that Blizzard’s ex-boss labeled it as a cheap copy. Blizzard’s hero-shooter is at an all-time low right now, and if it doesn’t bring this one feature, it won’t be long before it joins the same club as Concord.

Overwatch 2 player count dips to record low, proving Blizzard Failed

With Marvel Rivals‘ current pace and plans for future additions, there’s no denying the fact that NetEase snatched the top spot from Overwatch 2 in the hero-shooter genre.

Currently, Blizzard’s hero shooter is facing its worst spiral ever, and its player count has dropped to the lowest point ever, at least since its arrival on Steam. Overwatch 2

16,919 concurrent players on Valve’s service, but it’s not the worst thing.

Marvel Rivals debuted right out of the gate with a peak concurrent player count of 490,990 players on Steam. This surpassed Overwatch 2’s count of 75,608 players. It looks even more terrible for Blizzard when you take into account the viewers for the game on various streaming platforms.

It’s clear that NetEase is currently destroying Overwatch 2, as it has all the momentum and community support to do so. So, how can Blizzard recover its game from this downfall? Well, it’s simple: follow Fortnite‘s strategy of featuring live events.

Epic Games’ live-service Battle Royale title has collaborated with every major franchise and artist under the run. From Star Wars to Travis Scott, you name it, and it’s in Fortnite. These crossovers tend to bring live events that are incredible as they allow fans to relive their favorite moments in the world of Fortnite.

It’s an effective strategy as it helps any game retain its popularity and not lose steam due to new competitors. Although Blizzard has brought various crossovers to its hero-shooter, such as One-Punch Man and Transformers, they clearly aren’t working.

Blizzard needs to break hell loose and collaborate with every popular franchise and artist out there to pull players out of Marvel Rivals back to the Overwatch sequel. On top of this, the studio also needs to focus on innovation and regular updates to make sure the game feels fresh.

Why has NetEase’s Hero Shooter surpassed Overwatch 2?

If you’ve forgotten, the Overwatch sequel debuted with a number of issues in October 2022. The game’s monetization practices were awful, and most of its progression, such as heroes, was locked behind pricey Battle Pass. Players were annoyed that Blizzard removed the simple loot boxes in favor of chasing industry trends and making money.

However, NetEase has made sure not to repeat those errors. Marvel Rivals allows gamers to choose all 33 heroes for absolutely free. The developer has also confirmed that all future heroes will be absolutely free of cost, alongside modes and maps.

The only thing NetEase is monetizing is the game’s cosmetics. Even the game’s free Battle Pass gives players cool skins, cinematics, and other stuff. Those who purchase the premium Battle Pass get additional rewards that don’t impact the gameplay in the slightest.

What’s great about NetEase’s Battle Pass approach? You can complete it at your own pace. That’s right; the developer has eliminated all sorts of time pressures that are typical of its competition.
