Assassin’s Creed Shadows Canon Mode Will Fix Narrative Inconsistencies Born From Player-Made Choices

As the open-world concept started spreading into role-playing games, in-game stories began dividing into branches, and players became trapped in dialogue trees that determined how the game would progress.

Ubisoft’s widely renowned RPG, the Assassin’s Creed series, has also followed this progression for several years. However, Ubisoft is ready to bring a significant change with the upcoming installment.

Choice-based games have a separate fanbase, but often random choices lead to events that have no connection to what players experienced previously. Assassin’s Creed Shadows has taken a step to resolve this problem with its brand-new Canon Mode. This mode will save players from confusion during gameplay.

Choice-based progression in RPGs is a controversial topic. While many players love the thrill of choosing different dialogues to see various storylines progress, there’s a massive audience that is against this system. They prefer to sit down and enjoy a single storyline without worrying about what the other options might bring.

The forthcoming Assassin’s Creed title has given this matter deep thought and brought the Cannon mode, which, according to the creative director, Jonathan Dumont, will make in-game choices on players’ behalf.

post, Dumont mentioned that the story of Shadows will be on the same line as the classic RPGs of the series, Valhalla and Odyssey, but there’s a great addition where players can get a choice-free experience with the Canon mode. The statement straightforwardly declares,

Since the fan base is divided on branching dialogues, we have incorporated an option called CANON MODE which allows you to play the game with choices already made for you, to give you a choice free experience.

The branching thing will be there, and the decisions will impact the gameplay, but the consequences won’t be very severe. The choices will be mostly related to the recruitment of the allies and romance with a specific character.

Therefore, as players enable Canon Mode, they will get rid of dialogues and can enjoy less stressful gameplay without the headache of missing out on some better consequences with every choice they make.

Player-made choices can sometimes be disastrous. They often complicate matters and cause inconsistencies in the storyline. As players are generally unaware of what to choose, they tend to select options that appeal to them.

In this process, they take the story down a different path that is sometimes not even connected to the main theme of the game. That’s bothersome, and after some time, players completely lose connection with the main narrative of the game.

With the Canon Mode, players don’t need to make the decisions anymore. Because everything will be already set as the game will take the decisions, there’s a little chance that the game will go off track. As the game progresses through a pre-set track and no one interrupts the storyline, narrative consistency will be there throughout, giving players a wholesome experience.

Community players are also satisfied with this new mode, and they have expressed their assertive responses on

The success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is highly important for Ubisoft’s survival in the gaming industry after the consistent mess it has created throughout the years. From that point, it looks like the introduction of Canon Mode is going to be a great change toward improvement.

After a sudden postponement, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is now scheduled to be released on February 14, 2025. Once it comes globally, it will become clear how it competes with the modern-day AAA RPG titles.
