(eHDV) sector and high-powered charging infrastructure. This significant investment aims to transform Poland’s transportation and logistics industry, which accounts for 6-7% of the country’s GDP.

The approved electric heavy truck investment funding includes €465 million for subsidies to support the purchase of heavy-duty electric vehicles in the N2 and N3 categories. This amount is double the originally announced budget, reflecting the importance of this initiative for Poland’s transportation sector.

Under the “Support for the purchase or lease of zero-emission vehicles of the N2 and N3 categories” program, transport companies can receive subsidies to modernize their fleets. The subsidy amounts vary based on company size and vehicle type. Large companies can receive up to 30% of eligible costs, medium-sized companies up to 50%, and small companies up to 60%. For leased vehicles, the subsidy is capped at the amount of the initial leasing fee.

. A €465 million program will support the construction of public charging stations for heavy transport. At least 80% of this budget will be allocated to subsidies for chargers along the Trans-European Transport Network, with the remaining 20% earmarked for charging stations in logistics centers and intermodal terminals.

Maciej Mazur, managing director of PSNM, noted that while the charging infrastructure program received a positive recommendation from the EIB in March 2024, its launch is not expected until the first half of 2025. The program is set to run until 2029, with funding awarded through competitions based on criteria such as subsidy effectiveness, implementation timing, and material efficiency.

Another approved program, “Construction/expansion of power grids for public high-power charging stations,” targets distribution network operators. With a budget of €465 billion, this initiative aims to develop power infrastructure to support the establishment of public charging stations along major TEN-T routes, in logistics centers, operational bases, and intermodal terminals.

The approval of these programs comes at a critical time for Poland’s transportation sector. Despite the country’s leading position in heavy transport within Europe, it has been slow to transition to zero-emission vehicles. Currently, there are only about 100 electric heavy

. The implementation of support like the electric heavy truck investment program is expected to accelerate market development and increase interest in electrification among transport companies in Poland.

In comparison to other EU countries, Poland’s eHDV adoption rate has been relatively low. For instance, Germany and the Netherlands have been frontrunners in eHDV deployment, with several hundred vehicles already in operation. France and Sweden have also made significant strides, with ambitious targets for eHDV adoption by 2030. Poland’s new investment program aims to close this gap and position the country as a leader in sustainable heavy transport within the EU.

The transportation and logistics sector in Poland is a significant economic contributor, comprising 125,000 companies and employing around 750,000 people. The development of electromobility is crucial for protecting the competitiveness and innovation of the Polish market, especially in light of the European Union’s strategic objectives and proposals to tighten emission standards for heavy vehicles.

Many companies are also seeking to decarbonize their supply chains, which includes the freight transport stage. This trend further underscores the importance of supporting the Polish transportation and logistics sector’s transformation to maintain and strengthen Poland’s position in European heavy transport.

funding represents a significant step towards modernizing Poland’s heavy-duty vehicle fleet and supporting the necessary infrastructure for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the transportation sector. As these programs are implemented over the coming years, they are expected to play a crucial role in Poland’s transition to a more sustainable and competitive transportation industry.

The economic impact of this electric heavy truck investment is projected to be substantial. According to industry analysts, the development of the eHDV sector and associated charging infrastructure could create up to 10,000 new jobs in Poland by 2030. These jobs would span various sectors, including vehicle manufacturing, charging station installation and maintenance, electrical engineering, and software development for fleet management systems.

Furthermore, the electric heavy truck investment is expected to stimulate innovation in Poland’s automotive and technology sectors. As demand for eHDVs and charging solutions grows, local companies are likely to increase their R&D efforts, potentially leading to new patents and technological advancements. This could position Poland as a hub for eHDV technology within the EU, attracting further investment and creating additional high-skilled job opportunities.

The ripple effects of this electric heavy truck investment are anticipated to extend beyond the transportation sector. As the demand for electricity grows with the increasing number of eHDVs, it could drive investments in renewable energy sources, further contributing to Poland’s green economy transition and creating jobs in the renewable energy sector.
