Broome swimming star, Japser Barnett, seeks community support for national championship dream

Broome swimming prodigy Jasper Barnett is seeking community support to help get her to the 2025 National Swimming Championships.

At just 12 years-old, Jasper has already made waves in the swimming world.

Earlier this year, representing the Broome Surf Life Saving Club, she won the WA State title in the Surf Race at Trigg Beach.

Her success extended into the pool in September, where she represented Rubibi at the WA State Championships, taking home an impressive six gold medals and a bronze.

In November, Jasper set a new WA record in the 50m butterfly for her age group, equalling the WA open country record.

Her dedication and talent have earned her a place in the 2025 *********** Age and Multi-Class Age Championships, where she will compete in the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke, events in which she has consistently excelled.

However, the road to the championships is not without its challenges.

With the competition being held in Brisbane this coming April, the cost of travel, accommodation, training and competition fees is significant, prompting the Barnett family to turn to the community for assistance.

Jasper’s mother, Yuki Barnett, launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the expenses.

On the page she described Jasper’s passion for swimming and her relentless determination to achieve her goals.

“Jasper has always had an amazing connection with water. This is a significant achievement and a dream come true for Jasper,” Ms Barnett said.

“However, participating in such a prestigious competition comes with substantial costs.

“Between the training, travel, accommodation, and competition fees, the expenses are more than her family can bear alone.”

As of December 11, the campaign has already raised $3040 from 37 donors with a target of reaching $10,000.
