PM announces AFP-led anti-Semitism taskforce

Anthony Albanese has unveiled an AFP-led taskforce to tackle rising anti-Semitism in Australia, days after the arson attack on a Melbourne synagogue.

Speaking on Monday alongside AFP chief commissioner Reece Kershaw and ASIO boss Mike Burgess, Mr Albanese confirmed the synagogue fire was being investigated as a “terrorist incident”.

“Our world-class agencies will provide all the support necessary to find the perpetrators and ensure they face the full force of the law,” he told reporters in Canberra.

“Today, I can also announce that we have established AFP Special Operation Avelite for anti-Semitism This is in response to the attack last Friday morning that is now the third as arson attack after the attack on Josh Burns’ office, and the incident in Sydney.”

The taskforce will also include Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, and other law enforcement and security agencies.

“ASIO will be assisting police with their investigations and assisting *********** Federal Police with their special operation,” Mr Burgess said.

“We’re also conducting our own inquiries to ensure there is no ongoing threat similar to the attack we’ve seen in Melbourne.

“At this stage, we have no intelligence to suggest that is the case.

“The national terrorism threat level remains at probable.”
