Neil Newbon Has Been Eyeing a Role in Helldivers 2, and Would Happily Do “A Cameo of Screaming”

The influence of Super Earth’s managed democracy continues to spread across the galaxy, recruiting loyal soldiers from all walks of life. Among the latest potential recruits? None other than Neil Newbon, the award-winning actor who brought Karl Heisenberg to life in Resident Evil: Village and won Best Performance at The Game Awards 2023 for his portrayal of Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3.

It seems that between taking home major awards and attending fan conventions, Newbon has been spending quite a bit of time spreading liberty across the galaxy in Helldivers 2. And now, he’s ready to take his commitment to Super Earth to the next level.

In fact, during a recent interview at the Golden Joystick Awards, Newbon made it clear just how far he’d go to join the ranks of the Helldivers—and his enthusiasm for democracy is absolutely infectious.

During his appearance at the 42nd Golden Joystick Awards, Newbon couldn’t contain his excitement when discussing his gaming allegiances. While he’s known for bringing complex characters to life in various games, it seems his heart truly lies with spreading managed democracy across the galaxy:

There’s quite a lot of games that I really liked. I’m a huge fan of Helldivers 2, like… MASSIVE. To the point where I would happily do a cameo of screaming and that’s all. If they said ‘just scream for like an hour,’ it’d be great!

The actor’s enthusiasm for the game was clearly evident as he discussed his desire to join the ranks of Super Earth’s finest. His eyes lit up with genuine excitement at the mere possibility of contributing to the game, even in such a specific capacity:

Newbon’s potential addition to Helldivers 2 makes perfect sense given his talent for roles that require a touch of sarcasm and dramatic flair. His portfolio shows he would shine in a role that requires him to sound flippant or even obnoxiously patriotic—perfect for Super Earth’s over-the-top propaganda.

The actor even treated viewers to what an “Astarion scream” might sound like in Helldivers 2, though he was quick to point out that he probably couldn’t use the exact voice due to IP rights. Still, the mere thought of hearing Baldur’s Gate 3‘s favorite vampire yelling “SWEET LIBERTY, MY LEG!” is enough to bring a smile to any Helldiver’s face.

The idea of Newbon joining Helldivers 2 isn’t as far-fetched as it might seem. Arrowhead has shown time and again that they listen to their community, implementing various quality-of-life changes and customization options based on player feedback.

With the game’s massive success—selling over 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks and earning nominations for Best Multiplayer Game and Best Ongoing Game at The Game Awards 2024—bringing in top-tier voice talent like Newbon could help elevate the game’s already satirical take on extreme nationalism and corrupt government bodies.

Plus, with Helldivers 2 continuing to grow and evolve, there’s always room for more voices in the fight for liberty. Whether it’s calling in stratagems, celebrating victories, or mourning the loss of yet another teammate to “friendly fire,” having a diverse cast of voice talent only adds to the game’s charm.

And who knows? Maybe this could start a trend. Imagine a whole roster of beloved voice actors joining the ranks of Super Earth’s finest. The possibilities are endless, and the potential for memorable moments (and memorable screams) is through the roof.

For now, though, we’ll have to wait and see if Newbon’s wish comes true. One thing’s for sure—he’s already proven himself a true believer in the cause of managed democracy.
