After Marvel Rivals, Fortnite Invites Controversy by Introducing a Game Mode Popularized by Overwatch and Valorant

There’s no denying the fact that NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals was one of the most anticipated titles of the year. It finally went live on 6th December, and so far seems to be a huge success. Players simply can’t get enough of its roster of Marvel characters and fun gameplay.

Since its initial Marvel Rivals, it has drawn comparisons to another popular title from Blizzard, Overwatch 2. This is all due to the fact that it features a similar formula for pitting teams of players against one another, which many seem to find unoriginal and boring at this point. However, this train isn’t slowing down anytime soon, as even Fortnite is hopping onto it with its 5v5 mode.

Over the years, Epic Games has brought various updates and changes to Fortnite, and it has become a massive title. As you’d expect from such a game, there are a lot of rumors and speculations about upcoming features and modes. No matter the Season or Chapter, leakers have always informed us about what Epic Games is planning.

One of the longest-running rumors in the Fortnite community was that Epic Games was working on some sort of first-person mode for the game. While many thought it might be for the battle royale mode, it seems like it’s a completely different thing altogether.

Epic has just revealed that a brand new mode for the game dubbed “Ballistic” will be hitting early access on December 11.

Epic describes the brand-new 5v5 mode as a round-based and “adrenaline-filled” competition that will put two teams of five against one another. The

5v5 multiplayer games have been running rampant in the industry for a few years now. Overwatch 2 and Valorant are some of the biggest names, and now even Marvel Rivals has joined the bandwagon. With the Ballistic mode, it’s clear that Epic Games is squaring up against some big competition and wants its own share now.

However, the popular 5v5 multiplayer format is at risk of suffering the same fate as the battle royale genre before. As multiple game developers chase industry trends, the market ends up becoming crowded with similar gameplay loops and borrowed mechanics.

The battle royale genre couldn’t stand the test of time because the games started lacking innovation, and players were fatigued. The 5v5 format might suffer from the same issues if developers keep pumping games with the same formula and ignoring fresh ideas and unique experiences.

The 5v5 format might be getting a bit too stale, but that doesn’t mean that success isn’t achievable, as proven by the release of Marvel Rivals. Data from

reveals that the game has reached a concurrent player count of 44,2286 on its very first day of reveal.

Currently, the same also has a “mostly positive” rating on Valve’s service, with 19,810 reviews as of writing. Gamers have noted that the title’s servers seem to be quite stable for a new game, indicating that its debut has gone off without any kind of issues.

While we can see the number of players on SteamDB, there’s no way to find how many players are trying the title on Xbox Series S/X and PS5. NetEase Games, unlike its competition, has taken the right steps with the game and has even featured a battle pass, which ditches the time limit.

That’s not all about the game; it even has a range of free drops available to players right now and a crossover with Fortnite. The future is looking quite bright for the Overwatch 2 competitor.

With that said, are you excited about Fortnite‘s own take on the 5v5 format? Let us know in the comments below.
