CD Projekt Red Is Bringing Gwent From the Witcher 3 Into the Real World to Compete With Riot’s Upcoming TCG

Nearly a decade after its debut in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Gwent is stepping off the screen and onto tabletops. CD Projekt Red, in collaboration with Hachette Boardgames and No Loading Games, is set to launch a physical version of the iconic card game in Q3 2025.

This physical edition of the card game promises to deliver an authentic recreation of the iconic in-game experience which has been claimed to be the “biggest ‘game within a game’ in media history.” With Riot Games’ reveal of Project K, a League of Legends-themed trading card game (TCG), CD Projekt Red (CDPR) is looking to compete.

Originally introduced as an in-game mini-game in The Witcher 3, Gwent quickly became a fan favorite. Despite CDPR’s massive success with third entry into The Witcher series, Gwent’s real-world debut has been a long time coming. CDPR had been busy with post-launch work on The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, and its expansions, but it’s here now.

How about a round of Gwent?

Hachette Boardgames has

the game’s physical release in both the US and ***. The tabletop experience of Gwent will include more than 400 cards and a playmat to replicate the tavern-table battles from The Witcher 3. Priced at $39.99 in the US and £44 in the ***, pre-orders are now open through Hachette’s official channels.

The timing of this physical release seems strategic. There’s been a recent resurgence of interest in The Witcher franchise because of new leaks regarding The Witcher 4, and other news. And it coincides with Riot’s entry into the same market with Project K.

Riot Games Has Its Own Challenger Coming

Riot Games is also making its mark on the physical TCG market with Project K, set to launch in early 2025. Based on the League of Legends universe, Project K builds on the design philosophies of Riot’s digital card game, Legends of Runeterra. Although Project K will debut in China, Riot has plans for a global rollout and is currently seeking publishing partners outside Asia.

Riot has highlighted that Project K is not just a physical adaptation of Legends of Runeterra, but a new experience with unique mechanics. It features iconic League champions like Ahri, Viktor, and Jinx, and will include decks that thematically match their in-game lore. It will also include two-versus-two and free-for-all matches.

With Gwent and Project K both targeting the same 2025 release window, the stage is set for a battle between the two. While CDPR benefits from nearly a decade of nostalgic fan devotion, Riot’s Project K taps into the enormous popularity of the League of Legends universe.

The success of Arcane on

and Riot’s track record in competitive gaming gives Project K an edge if the two ever decide to host competitive tournaments of any kind. It will be a battle to see which game has a better niche to draw player interest.
