Dragon Quest creator asks players who’ve finished DQ3 HD-2D Remake to lend it to children

The creator of Dragon Quest has asked players who’ve completed the recent Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake to lend their copy to a child or newcomer.

The official Dragon Quest account on X posted an announcement today that the remake had sold 2 million copies since its release three weeks ago.

“The HD-2D version of Dragon Quest 3 has exceeded 2 million copies shipped and downloaded worldwide,” the post read.

“Thank you to all the brave warriors who adventured with us, and to all the brave warriors who are about to embark on an adventure, have a good journey!”

Quoting this message, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii urged players with a copy of the game to pass it on to others, to help introduce them to the series and the RPG genre.

“It seems that so many people are playing it, and I couldn’t be happier,” Horii tweeted.

“The game is much easier to play, so if you’ve already completed it, please lend the software to people who have never played Dragon Quest before, or to small children, and teach them how to play.”

Horii’s request will doubtless be appreciated by Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida, who explained in 2022 that Final Fantasy 16 didn’t feature turn-based combat because younger audiences weren’t so familiar with older RPGs.

“I’m from a generation that grew up with command and turn-based RPGs,” Yoshida said at the time. “I think I understand how interesting and immersive it can be. On the other hand, for the past decade or so, I’ve seen quite a number of opinions saying ‘I don’t understand the attraction of selecting commands in video games’.

“This opinion is only increasing, particularly with younger audiences who do not typically play RPGs.”
