‘A lot of people may never finish it’

Modern-day triple AAA titles have become too big for their own good. A massive influx of money and resources is currently being put into game development for nothing. Most players do not even reach the very end of a game these days.

Even the former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden agrees; he feels that with each generation of consoles, the price of developing games increases massively due to games becoming too large for players to keep up with. Amy Hennig has been saying the same for a very long time now.

How often do you see players beat a 100-hour gameplay? Most of the time these huge games might be getting rusty in some corner of your library waiting to be put on since you last played them. We live in a fast-paced world, which means that people do not have the time or the patience to sit through an extremely large game.

Ammy Hennig feels that there is no point in creating something that players will find difficult to finish. Imagine making a film or writing a novel that people fail to finish. It defeats the purpose of storytelling and entertainment.

During an interview with Eurogamer, Shawn Layden was confronted with the difficult question focusing on the reason behind players not being able to finish long games. To which he

And when you’re 18 to 23, you’re time rich and money poor. But as the average age of the gamer moved into the late 20s, the early 30s – well, it’s the opposite, right? Maybe you aren’t money rich, but you’re definitely time poor. So I think our approach is a mismatch to that market, to reality

This opinion helps bring things into perspective; however, Hennig has been saying the same for a very long time now. She was able to foresee this disaster. During an interview with Gamebeat, she

Yes, you can look at Spider-Man and Red Dead and God of War, and they’re deeply narrative. But they’re also really long. There’s also an understanding that a lot of people may never finish it. They’ll only play the first part of a game.

Large games not only increase the production cost but also make games extremely difficult to finish. It benefits no one at the end of the day.

Amy Hennig and Shawn Layden Are On The Same Page

Increasing game size is bothersome to both the developer and as well as the player. The developer’s quest to make the game highly interactive by incorporating multiple side quests and a huge open world increases the production cost.

Similarly, the same can be quite overwhelming for players who might often see themselves getting lost in the side quests and other open-world elements that the main story suffers from.

This in turn helps no one, neither the developer nor the player, and Amy Hennig and Shawn Layden seem to be on the same page on that matter. Story and gameplay should always come first, not the length of a game. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below.
