DC Universe Online Using Destiny 2’s Strategy to Rebrand Narrative Content Release Could Be a Blessing

DC Universe Online is entering a new era. Initially released in 2011, this Massively Multiplayer Online game has created a fanbase that eagerly waits for new updates, and the primary reason behind this popularity is that the game enables them to interact with iconic DC characters. The best part now is an update is on the way, which is making certain changes that can be a blessing for the game.

Notably, this time Dimensional Ink Games has drawn inspiration from Bungie’s widely renowned FPS game. Destiny 2s popularity is massive, but with the last expansion, The Final Shape, it has disappointed players to some extent. However, what didn’t work for Destiny 2 may work for DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is set in the fictional universe of the DC comics where players can customize their avatar before diving into the storyline. From the character faction to body type to the personality of the character, everything can be set according to one’s preference.

As the game begins, the player’s avatar will become an official member of either the Justice League (hero) or The Society (villain) to continue the progression and complete missions.

The reception was average, but still, Dimensional Ink Games has been working hard to make this game better than most other MMOs. Taking this effort a little further, DCUO is bringing story arcs, a new way of rebranding the narrative content. An official

from the executive producer of the game, Andre Emerson, revealed this fact.

In this challenging gaming world, survival is tough for live-service games, and Ubisoft’s XDefiant once again highlighted this recently with its pathetic failure and shutdown. Therefore, this story arc system may cause DCUO something similar, especially after The Final Shape got brutally criticized for it.

However, the executive producer of the game is immensely hopeful about what they want to bring. According to him,

We have big plans to release multi-part narratives, highly focused on delivering compelling and compassionate storytelling. These types of stories aren’t meant to be episodic and so the idea of Chapters making up each new Story Arc conceptualized.

He has described it as the darkest story arc that will be divided into Chapters. Along with this, the Renown system will also be revised, and players will receive Renown for defeating every boss based on the difficulty level.

Why Does Story Arc Seem to Work for DC Universe Online When It Was a Complete Failure for Destiny 2?

Story Arc indicates a chronological construction of a plot, which is used in novels and comic books. This specific narrative style is more suitable for episodic storytelling.

A perfect story arc has five stages: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Additionally, this story arc properly records the transformation of characters as they go through different situations.

These are the most prominent reasons behind this particular storytelling method working in DC Universe Online. This MMO is set in the DC universe and follows the DC comic book characters. Therefore, for a game that is essentially created from a comic book, it will be convenient to use a method of telling stories that comic books generally use.

So, expectedly, this MMO will break the story arc in proper order so that all the chapters are linked to each other. Additionally, Emerson confirmed that story arcs won’t erase Episodes. They will co-exist with the future Chapters as Dimensional Ink Games is trying to focus on longer-form storytelling and rebranding the way of releasing narrative.

If we compare it to Destiny 2: The Final Shape’s rebranding content using story arc, the first thing that went against Bungie is that Destiny 2 is not based on any novel or comic book. Therefore, the distribution of content was a mess.

To go for a longer narrative, it chose long chapters and episodes, but the core issue was the same: the storylines weren’t connected. They are spread all over the Destiny 2 universe, which confuses players more as they try to understand what’s going on.

So, hopefully, the MMO will perform well with these new strategies, and as the report confirmed, the first four parts will start coming with Chapter 1 releasing toward the end of January 2025.
