Obsidian is Doing the One Thing for Avowed That Todd Howard’s Bethesda Forgot To Do for Starfield and Skyrim

Although it’s a spin-off of the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Obsidian’s Avowed has drawn a lot of comparisons to other popular RPGs of the genre, in particular, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

The dark fantasy tone, dull ****** palette, and first-person perspective shown in the game’s trailer remind us of Bethesda’s great RPGs such as Skyrim and Starfield. However, unlike Todd Howard and his team, Obsidian has focused a lot on ironing out all kinds of bugs and glitches in the game.

Obsidian’s Avowed Will be a Polished Game Unlike Bethesda’s Skyrim and Starfield

There’s no denying that Bethesda and Todd Howard have given us some incredible games, such as Skyrim and Fallout. However, what all of these titles have in common is that they’re a bug-infested mess upon their launch. For some odd reason, bugs are a consistent feature of every game by the studio.

What’s worse is that they never seem to leave Bethesda’s games. Even though the studio tends to bring massive updates to fix issues, the bugs return in some form or another. It depends upon modders to fix all problems, which proves that it isn’t confident with what it pushes out.

However, that’s not going to be the case with Avowed. While chatting with

, Obsidian Entertainment’s lead environmental artist, Dennis Presell, opened up about the development of the RPG and how he has never had as much confidence in a title as he does with Avowed.

Games are really hard to make, and every experience is different. I’ve always felt a certain level of dread months before a game shipped, a case of the nerves. But this is the most confident I’ve ever been in my experience at this stage of the project

Unlike Bethesda’s development team, Presnell knows about the challenges of developing such games but is confident with the project. He praises Obsidian’s progress so far and states the studio is currently focusing on polishing and squashing all types of bugs.

The fact that he’s confident about the team’s efforts proves that Obsidian is taking special care of the game and wants to make sure that it delivers a final product that’s not buggy.

It’s great to see that Obsidian isn’t following the industry trend of releasing broken messes and then promising to bring them to a “playable state” with updates.

All is Not Going Well For Obsidian and Avowed

Obsidian’s next fantasy RPG is one of the most hyped games for 2025. However, the studio has faced a lot of criticism. Comments from the title’s developer state that the game could launch without a dedicated 60 FPS mode, and before that, its release was pushed back from Fall 2024 to February 2025.

The game is once again in hot water. Recently,

– Digital Standard and Digital Premium Edition SteelBook.

Players noticed that the third version, which costs $94.99, doesn’t come with a disc despite it being labeled as a “physical” version. Although it’s packed with some physical aspects, such as a map and a book, the fact that it comes with a code to download the game means that players won’t be able to obtain a hard copy.

Avowed isn’t the first title we’ve seen in recent years to be restricted to a digital-only release. Sony’s highly controversial PS5 Pro doesn’t come with a disc drive, and even Xbox Series X Digital doesn’t feature one.

With so many developers and consoles abandoning physical versions of games, players are worried that it might lead to the end of physical gaming in the long run.
