With Warcraft 1 & 2 Preservation, GOG Protecting Digital Ownership Will Prevent Situations Like Ubisoft Delisting the Crew on Steam

The problem of people not spending $40 (£35) on Blizzard’s recent remasters of Warcraft 1 and 2 has been addressed quickly. To prevent innocent customers from inadvertently purchasing DRM-free, classic editions of those games for $15 (£12) when they could be spending much more on Blizzard’s own storefront, the studio is removing the original versions of those games from GOG.

In an effort to keep older games accessible and playable on contemporary platforms long after publishers and developers have abandoned them, GOG recently unveiled its game preservation program. So, if you are sad that Blizzard has removed Warcraft 1 and 2, then don’t be, because GOG will have your back.

As technology advances and these games age, GOG will continue to provide tech support in the event that a game you purchased is no longer available, hopefully guaranteeing that you can continue to play it without any issues.

This came about as a result of Blizzard’s instructions to discontinue two of its older games, Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2. Both will continue to be part of the GOG Preservation Program even after they are no longer available for purchase on GOG. However, Blizzard has always been so ignorant towards its Warcraft franchise.

In a recent

, GOG announced the delisting and then discussed the implications for the future of the GOG Preservation Program.

Once a game joins the Program, we pledge to maintain its compatibility even if it gets delisted from the store. This means that owners of those titles can still expect a seamless experience and tech support for those titles. This also considers potential changes in Windows OS that may impact games’ playability.

If you’re interested, you still have time to purchase the Warcraft games before they’re delisted on December 13. Use the coupon code MakeWarcraftLiveForever to receive a discount if you purchase them all at once.

To be clear, that is a commitment to a comprehensive policy on delisted games, not just an announcement regarding Warcraft 1 and 2. Once a game is added to GOG’s preservation list, it ******** there whether or not you can purchase it.

Although the boost to GOG’s reputation likely has its own indirect benefits, it’s encouraging to see that you’re making a significant investment in products that won’t directly generate any revenue. However, this money-mongering decision from Blizzard was never accepted by the fans.

Ubisoft’s The Crew Wasn’t Saved Like Warcraft 1 and 2

Ubisoft delisted The Crew from all digital storefronts in December 2023, which also prevented them from selling microtransactions going forward. Additionally, they proceeded with the March 2024 announcement of the server shutdown, citing “upcoming server infrastructure and licensing constraints” as the reason.

The Crew, created by Ubisoft studios Ivory Tower and Reflections, was released in 2014 on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Windows. It allowed players to compete in massive online races or role-playing games in a persistent open-world version of the Contiguous ******* States.

Although The Crew was intended to be played online, Ubisoft made some controversial decisions in 2014. Even if you weren’t playing any multiplayer modes, you couldn’t play The Crew unless you were online. This seemed to indicate that the game was designed to be unplayable if it was taken offline.

And Ubisoft went one step further. Gamers with copies of The Crew had their licenses revoked. This meant that you couldn’t even access the files to figure out how to play the game, regardless of whether you had a physical disc copy or a digital download.

However, after requests from thousands of fans, Ubisoft Ivory Tower revealed in September 2024 that it was working individual offline modes for the games and its sequel The Crew 2.
