An Underrated 2012 Halo Live Action Should’ve Been the Template for Pablo Schreiber’s Paramount Series

The majority of the time, new installments in the Halo franchise prove to be a hit regardless of their medium, including books, for which gamers have shown lots of love in the past.

However, Paramount’s Halo TV show was different. Ever since its debut, it’s been a subject of criticism for diverting the established roots of the franchise. Paramount+ and Pablo Schreiber won’t be going ahead with a third season of the series, but if they had followed 2012’s Forward Unto Dawn web series, the show would have been a smash hit.

Even though the Halo TV show didn’t hit the mark for fans of the franchise, it undoubtedly brought the franchise back to the forefront. This is quite an achievement, considering the fact that on the gaming side of things, things haven’t been going well for the franchise.

The franchise’s resurgence in recent months has brought everyone’s attention to Forward Unto Dawn, another live-action adaptation of the Halo series. This was a web series that

all the way back in 2012, ahead of the release of 343 Studios‘ Halo 4.

Set before the events of the mainline Halo games, the series followed the story of Thomas Lasky, one of the cadets at Corbulo Academy of Military Science. When the Covenant attacks the academy, he is tasked with teaming up with none other than Master Chief and learns the harsh realities of humanity’s war against the ******.

Throughout its production, it faced many challenges. However, the show never once deviated away from the beloved aspects of the franchise and characters.

made it a point that every viewer should be able to relate the series to what was seen in games, and even brought a team on set to fact-check everything.

Forward Unto Dawn‘s decision to stick to the source material of the Halo franchise allowed it to succeed among the fans. With any game adaptation, this is a crucial aspect; otherwise, players feel alienated and betrayed that key characters didn’t get the justice they deserved.

While creating the Halo TV show, its showrunner Steven Kane repeatedly

that the team didn’t even bother looking at the video games of the iconic franchise. This was one of the reasons why the show never took off among fans of the franchise. If Paramount had learned from the success of Forward Unto Dawn, the show would’ve never been a bust.

There’s Still Hope For Master Chief and Cortona

Paramount has decided to close the curtains on Master Chief and his adventures. However, there’s still a chance for survival.

suggest that 343 Industries, Xbox, and Amblin Television have come together in an attempt to shop the TV series around.

In the past, we’ve seen multiple TV shows being shopped around and others managing to survive this purgatory. FOX initially canceled Brooklyn Nine-Nine and then revived it within a span of just 30 hours. At one point, FOX even canned Family Guy.

However, Halo still needs to collect the same levels of success at the above-mentioned shows since it’s still catered towards a niche audience as a video game adaption.

There’s a chance that the show’s low viewership was all due to the fact that it was on Paramount+. Many in the industry have suggested that the service has comparatively fewer subscribers compared to its rivals, such as

Halo changing its streaming network might not only give it a chance to conclude but also bring a completely new audience.
