‘Exit door’: Libby Mettam labels ‘insulting’ reports Amber-***** Sanderson wants portfolio change

Reports that Amber-***** Sanderson is seeking to drop her health portfolio after the State election are an “insult” to the workforce, ******** leader Libby Mettam has declared.

Ms Sanderson — who is also considered a front runner to take over from Roger Cook as Labor leader when he eventually retires — has been touted as one of several ministers likely to be part of significant changes to Cabinet if Labor wins the election in March.

It is understood she is seeking a change after what has been a tough three years in the job.

And sources say she is likely to get a good hearing from the Premier, a former health minister who asked to relinquish the portfolio in 2021 after several torrid years of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Ms Mettam said health workers would be offended to hear Ms Sanderson was ready to move on.

“The health portfolio is in absolute shambles,” she said on Sunday. “And what an insult to the health workers of this State that she’s already looking at the exit door.

“Health has not been a priority under the Labor government, which is why any aspiring premier wants to get out of the portfolio as soon as possible before the election campaign has effectively begun.”

Ms Mettam said Ms Sanderson’s and Mr Cook’s record on health had been “absolutely appalling”, with ambulance ramping on the rise and elective surgery lists blowing out.

But Mr Cook dismissed talk of changes to his Cabinet after the March 8 poll.

“We’re not focused on portfolios in the future Cook Labor Government,” he said.

“We are focused on the election, making sure that we take our policies to the people of Western Australia — earn their trust and earn their votes to make sure that we can form government.

“Conversations around portfolios — that can come if the people of Western Australia give us the permission to form government again.

“We’re not taking anything for granted.”
