Switch 2 Sales Could Take a Severe Hit in China Following Nintendo eShop Services Being Discontinued in the Country in 2026

According to a recent announcement, Nintendo will be slowly phasing out its online portal and gaming services out of China by March 31, 2026. After this point, there will be no free trials. Eventually, all software that includes paid or free titles will be unavailable to purchase or claim.

After May 15, 2026, no titles or codes will be available for download. Even the DLC will become nonexistent around this time. The reason for this extreme measure is yet to be disclosed by the company.

Why Switch 2 sales could take a huge hit in China

According to the online leaks, Switch 2 will be unveiled sometime around January and will be available sometime during the month of March 2025. Switch 2 will be the successor to the original console, which was released back in 2017.

Switch 2, just like its predecessor, will be a handheld device with better specs and display. Switch is now sold in China as part of a partnership with Tencent, the ******** tech powerhouse. It was released in China in 2020, with only one first-party game: the world-famous Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Other older Switch titles were localized for the ******** market in the years following the initial release.

To compensate ******** Switch owners, after November 27, 2024, they will be able to redeem four Switch games for free. To redeem these games, the owners do need to have an active WeChat account. The games that the owners can choose are mentioned below.

  • Pokémon Let’s Go! Eevee
  • Pokémon Go! Pikachu
  • New Pokémon Snap
  • Kirby Star Allies
  • New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  • Super Mario Party
  • Mario Tennis Aces
  • Yoshi’s Crafted World
  • Flexible Brain School
  • Dr Kawashima’s Brain Exercises

Players can only redeem the free games once per WeChat account, which is linked to their Nintendo accounts. If a user has multiple Switch consoles, they will need multiple active WeChat accounts as well to redeem the free games.

Future consequences of this decision by Nintendo

Now, due to this sudden decision for the region of China, their upcoming Switch 2 console might take a big hit in terms of sales. Switch 2 is expected to be unveiled in January 2025 and then a few months later, it will be available for purchase.

The above-mentioned month is based on leaks and it’s for the rest of the world. China usually has its own date for the launch of a video game because due to their government rules and censorship, video game titles need to go under strict localization processes, so that they can be circulated in the market.

However, this sudden announcement of shutting down the ******** Nintendo eShop will lead to their game services being unavailable after a particular *******. This also raises the possibility that the Switch 2 may not be offered in ******** markets.
