An emotional Sally Fitzgibbons has vowed to “keep fighting to the end” to keep her place on surfing’s elite tour after staring down reigning world champion Caroline Marks in dramatic round of 16 heat at the Margaret River Pro.

Fitzgibbons, a 14-year veteran on the championship tour, came into the final World Surf League event before the mid-season cut needing a big result to avoid dropping off the top tier for a second straight season and kept her hopes alive on Thursday with a come-from-behind win over Marks at South Side break.
