Broome Barracudas place second in annual Pilbara Swimming Championships in Karratha

The Broome Barracudas have returned home from the annual Hancock Prospecting Pilbara Championships in Karratha donning silver medals with the team placing second in the competition.

Held at the Karratha Leisureplex on November 22-24, the competition featured keen swimmers across nine clubs from the Gascoyne, Kimberley and Pilbara.

After an excellent performance over the weekend were, the Broome Barracudas were named runner-up club champion on 934.5 points, just behind the Karratha ******** Swimming Club in first place on 1034.5 points.

Some 16 Broome swimmers travelled to Karratha to compete, with every Broome swimmer that attended bringing home a medal.

The Barracudas also claimed the handicap champion title, calculated based on the number of swims and swimmers competing.

Northern Swimming Association regional coordinator Briana Crisp said the Barracudas were a strong club that always performed well.

“The Broome club always has a strong turnout. They are strong club and they have been for many, many years,” she said.

“Olympian Zac Incerti came out of Broome so Broome always puts up a strong showing.

“In recent years, the numbers that Broome has been coming with has been a little bit less, but the athletes that attend always have a strong showing at junior and state championships.”

Also paramount to the Pilbara Swimming Championships was a visit from Triple Olympian and Olympic Gold Medallist Brianna Throssell, meeting with athletes, sharing her experiences and offering support.

“We were very thankful to have Brianna Throssell attend on Friday evening and Saturday morning, she was actually our guest speaker at our opening ceremony,” Ms Crisp said.

“That was a highlight for all of the swimmers, especially since she’s just off her Paris campaign and the Paris Olympics.”
