MEPs to call for more military aid to Ukraine

Following Tuesday’s debate on the EU’s continued support to Ukraine, MEPs will vote at noon on a draft resolution calling for more military support for Ukraine, such as aircraft, long-range missiles and modern air defence systems. The draft text warns that North Korea’s involvement and Russia’s testing of new ballistic missiles in Ukraine marks “a new phase in the war” and demands Beijing end all military or dual-use assistance to Russia.

Georgia: MEPs set to demand new elections

In a vote at noon on Georgia’s worsening democratic crisis, MEPs are expected to demand that parliamentary elections be re-run under international supervision. The draft text also calls for EU sanctions against Georgia’s Prime Minister and other high-level officials and says that the policies pursued by the Georgian government are incompatible with the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration prospects.

Better protecting EU citizens against tobacco smoke exposure

Following yesterday’s debate, MEPs will vote at noon on a resolution calling for increased efforts to achieve a “tobacco-free generation” in the EU by 2040, as set out in Europe’s Beating ******* Plan. The draft texts demands extending bans on smoking and aerosol use in certain outdoor and indoor spaces and revising the current tobacco legislative framework as soon as possible.

Debate on defending children’s rights

At 9.00, MEPs and Commissioner Dalli will discuss how to better defend children’s rights in the EU and elsewhere, 35 years after children were first recognised as legal subjects entitled to human rights and fundamental freedoms,

In brief

Interference and espionage in EU universities. At around 10.15, MEPs and Commissioner Dalli will discuss how to reinforce academic independence and ensure research in EU universities is not compromised by foreign states.

Plastic pollution. In the afternoon, MEPs and Commissioner Dalli will debate the need to adopt an ambitious international legally binding agreement on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment.

Votes

At noon, MEPs will also vote on three resolutions on

  • Hong Kong, notably the cases of Jimmy Lai and the 45 activists recently convicted under the national security law;
  • the increasing and systematic repression of women in Iran; and
  • the shrinking space for civil society in Cambodia, in particular the case of the labour rights organisation CENTRAL
