“My ancestor’s refusal was fundamental to her granddaughter’s survival,” Jackson writes. “She did not plead or bargain with the doctor. She did not try to convince him that Arnesta was a child or human. Her refusal, remedy and protection transcended ********* or nonviolence. … ********* against [the doctor] would have been a ****** sentence for them, but nonviolence would also have ensured my great-grandmother’s ******.”
