Joshua Schuetz wakes from coma after horror Bali quadbike accident

An eight-year-old *********** boy left fighting for life following a horror quad bike accident in Bali is recovering in hospital and has come out of a coma.

A family friend says the brave youngster was now giving a “thumbs up” sign to communicate with his family.

Joshua Schuetz suffered a fractured skull and brain bleed when the quad bike he was on flipped last week, with his family rushing him back home to Perth on a mercy flight.

In an update on Wednesday, family friend Bernice Ariasa said doctors had woken Joshua from an induced coma on Tuesday.

“Today I am so happy and so proud to tell you all that yesterday they woke him and he was put on nasal oxygen, ventilator taken off completely,” she said.

“He has his own communication of Joshy style hand signals the coolest being a thumbs up.

“He struggles to talk due to all of the trauma of the various ventilators and tubes being put down his throat but he has asked what happened and they have told him and he’s been asked who’s in his team photo and he can name them.”

Joshua was scheduled to play in a soccer tournament on the Indonesian island.

The family were on a quad bike tour when the young boy suffered the accident last Wednesday.

He was put in an induced coma after undergoing surgery in Denpasar hospital.

Ms Ariasa set up a fundraiser to help alleviate financial stress for Joshua’s family.

As of Wednesday, the fundraiser had collected nearly $127,000 from a $150,000 target.

“Joshy has made some pretty incredible progress in the last two days,” Ms Ariasa said.

“Let’s just remind ourselves that our worlds changed on Wednesday last week and today is Wednesday so one week on from not knowing if Joshy was going to pull through everything he had gone through.”
