Kings Park’s Botanical Cafe *****: Grease build-up sparks blaze during busy lunch rush

Grease build-up in a kitchen air conditioning unit has sparked a ***** at Botanical Cafe in Kings Park during a busy lunch rush and the damage is expected to keep it shut for some time.

The blaze broke out just before midday on Sunday and staff tried to put it out before four ***** trucks arrived.

The employees used ***** extinguishers but also water and risked electric shock or worse from throwing it on live wires, incident controller Daniel Barnard said.

Fortunately, no-one was hurt.

“They have helped the scenario, but at the same time, it could have been a lot worse had they become victims or casualties of it,” Mr Barnard told reporters.

“So while they’ve done some good work here, just be careful in future … people trying to be good Samaritans trying to help, sometimes they can get themselves into trouble.

“They could have easily put some water onto some power and received electric shock.”

The ***** was a reminder to service air conditioning units regularly, Mr Barnard said.

He said the kitchen would be “out of action for a little while”.

“People might have to go somewhere else to get their daily coffee.”
