Stars consigned to WBBL wooden spoon after wash out

The Melbourne Stars have been consigned to their second WBBL wooden spoon after their final-round game against Adelaide was washed out.

Heavy and persistent Melbourne rain prompted Sunday morning’s clash between the competition’s two under-achievers to be abandoned before a ball could be bowled.

The weather at Junction Oval summed up a season of misery and disappointment for both clubs, who should have been among the title contenders given the talent on their lists.

The Strikers entered the season as two-time defending champions, but barely fired a shot as they lost six of their first seven games.

Tahlia McGrath and Bridgett Patterson had acceptable seasons with the bat and Megan Schutt with the ball, but the Strikers were still well below their best.

A heavy loss on Sunday would have left them with their first wooden spoon since the competition’s second season in 2016-17.

Instead, that mantle now rests with the Stars, who finish the summer with a 2-7 record.

Youngster Rhys McKenna produced some highlights with the bat and Kim Garth was their best with the ball.

But after winning two of their first three games, the Melbourne side’s campaign went into a tail spin with their fourth straight season out of the finals and first spoon since 2019-20.
