Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake producer wants Final Fantasy 6 to get the HD-2D treatment

The producer of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake says he would like to see Final Fantasy 6 getting the same treatment in the future.

Released this week, the remake makes use of the trademark HD-2D art style used in a number of modern Square Enix games, including Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Triangle Strategy and the remake of Live a Live.

, the game’s producer Masaaki Hayasaka was asked which Square Enix game he would like to see getting the HD-2D treatment next.

Hayasaka replied that while this wasn’t confirmation that it was in the works, he would like to see a similar remake of Final Fantasy 6, because that was the game that was used for reference when creating the HD-2D art style in the first place.

“It’s not that we have concrete plans for this, but personally I would have to say Final Fantasy 6,” he replied. “Octopath Traveler – the first HD-2D title – was developed while referencing Final Fantasy 6, as it had the highest quality pixel art. I would love to see how the game we referenced would look with the HD-2D art style.

“Because this art style itself was created while referencing such titles, it’s highly compatible with games originally made using pixel art. This compatibility is probably why people feel this style is a match made in heaven with these types of remakes.”

Square Enix confirmed earlier this year that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake will be followed next year by Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.

Although it may seem counter-intuitive to remake the third game first, in terms of the series’ storyline Dragon Quest 3 comes chronically first in the Erdrick trilogy, followed by Dragon Quest 1 and Dragon Quest 2.
