Pistons leave it late to break Hawks’ hearts in NBA

Cade Cunningham finished his third consecutive triple-double by scoring the winning basket with 8.5 seconds left as the Detroit Pistons beat the Atlanta Hawks in a 122-121 NBA nail-biter.

Cunningham had 22 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds on Friday night (Saturday AEDT).

*********** Dyson Daniels played a cracking game for the visiting Hawks, racking up 18 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Trae Young gave the Hawks their first lead of the game at 121-120 with 12.5 seconds left, but Cunningham drove and hit a ***** shot in traffic to put Detroit back in front.

Young (35 points, 13 assists) then drove to the basket before dishing the ball to Onyeka Okongwu, but Cunningham blocked his shot as time expired.

The Hawks trailed by as many as 24 points in the first half, but tied the game on Daniels’ floater with 3:36 to play.

Tobias Harris answered with a three-pointer, and after Okongwu’s dunk, Jaden Ivey’s three-point play made it 120-116 with 2:31 left.

Daniels wasn’t the only Aussie to suffer a narrow defeat, with Ben Simmons’ Brooklyn Nets pipped by four points by defending champions Boston.

Jayson Tatum had 33 points and nine rebounds and Payton Pritchard hit six points in overtime as the Celtics scored a 108-104 home victory.

Simmons had eight points, seven rebounds and eight assists in 27 minutes of court time.

In Cleveland, Darius Garland scored 27 points as the Cavaliers routed the Golden State Warriors 136-117 to extend their franchise-best start to 10-0 this season.

In Minneapolis, Anthony Edwards hit nine three-pointers and scored 37 points to help the Timberwolves beat the visiting Portland Trail Blazers 127-102.
