GTA 6 Sticking to 2025 Release Schedule Means 1 Upcoming Open World Game Sequel Will Suffer Just Like the OG Title

Take-Two Interactive’s latest financial report has confirmed what millions of fans have been eagerly waiting to hear: GTA 6 is officially on track for its Fall 2025 release. While this news has sent waves of excitement through the gaming community, it also casts a long shadow over other titles planning to launch in the same window.

History, as they say, has a funny way of repeating itself. Back in 2019, a promising RPG found itself caught in the crossfire of major AAA releases, and now—six years later—its sequel seems destined for a similar fate. It’s a tale as old as the gaming industry itself: timing can make or break even the most ambitious of projects.

A Tale of Unfortunate Timing

When Greedfall launched in September 2019, it had the misfortune of sharing its release window with heavyweight titles like Gears 5 and Borderlands 3. Despite offering a unique take on the RPG genre with its emphasis on diplomacy and political intrigue, the game struggled to capture the mainstream attention it deserved.

Now, Greedfall 2: The Dying World finds itself in a familiar predicament. Currently in Early Access on Steam, the game is showing promise despite mixed reviews, with developer Spiders actively working to refine the experience based on player feedback. However, its planned full-release window coincides with the arrival of GTA 6, a game that has already broken records with just its trailer.

Take-Two’s recent

also revealed that the ever-enduring GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million copies sold, setting an impossibly high bar for any game launching in its sequel’s vicinity. And with GTA 6‘s marketing machine likely to kick into high gear by late 2024/early 2025, smaller titles will face an uphill battle for visibility.

More Than Just Another RPG

What makes this timing particularly unfortunate for Greedfall 2 is that it just isn’t another indie open-world RPG. The series has carved out a unique niche for itself by emphasizing diplomatic solutions alongside traditional combat options. While most games let you ****** or sneak your way through problems, Greedfall gives equal weight to the art of negotiation.

The Early Access version of Greedfall 2 builds on these foundations, expanding the diplomatic gameplay systems that made the original stand out. Players can now engage in more complex political maneuvering, form alliances, and navigate intricate factional relationships. These features could help the game carve out its own dedicated audience, even in GTA 6‘s shadow.

However, early player feedback suggests there’s still work to be done. Performance issues, combat refinements, and UI improvements are all on Spiders’ to-do list. With several months of development ahead, the studio has time to polish the experience.

But will that be enough when competing with Rockstar‘s juggernaut? We’ll have to wait and see. That being said, it’s still ironic that a game series known for its diplomatic solutions now finds itself in a situation where negotiation won’t help—you simply can’t diplomacy your way around a Grand Theft Auto release date!

What do you think about this potential clash? Should smaller studios avoid releasing games near major AAA launches, or should they stand their ground? Let us know in the comments below.
