Sheffield Shield: Western Australia in driver’s seat after three days against Tasmania

A herculean 150 from Hilton Cartwright and two twilight wickets have put WA into the driver’s seat in their clash with Tasmania.

After posting 460 in response to 317, a depleted Western Australia squad nabbed both Tassie openers to leave the home side teetering at 2-10, trailing the reigning champions by 133 runs.

But it was a brilliant effort from Cartwright that set day three up for the visitors.

Resuming the day unbeaten on 48, the all-rounder played a calming presence as youngster Jayden Goodwin closed in on a second First Class century.

Just as it appeared twin tons were on the cards, Matthew Kuhnemann (5-100) produced a drifting yorker, knocking the left-hand Goodwin over six short of the magical milestone.

Cartwright found himself stuck at the non-strikers as Ashton Turner and Joel Curtis came and went, the keepers’ hot streak ended when he left one that thundered back into his pads.

Ashton Agar turned back the clock in his first red-ball match since playing the New Year’s Test in Sydney in 2023.

His defence appeared unbreakable as Cartwright made light work of the nervous 90s, two clever singles taking him to triple figures.

He remained understated through his celebrations before putting the foot down, crashing a cover drive to the rope.

Gabe Bell (2-56) looked good for the hosts on return, miserly with his bowling, but the West Aussie pair cashed in on the all-rounders.

Kuhnemann eventually found the breakthrough, kicking off a tired Cartwright for 153 from a remarkable 278 deliveries.

Agar continued to hold the innings together as WA’s lead passed 100.

Kuhnemann again proved the foil, trapping Agar lbw for 74 before helping wrap up the tail.

Tasmania’s openers were forced into a tricky 20-minute session before the close of play against Joel Paris and Cameron Gannon.

Neither Jake Weatherald nor Caleb Jewel could see it out, both falling for single digits as WA’s openers claimed a pole apiece.
