Conway hurt ahead of AFLW finals as Lions beat Saints

Sophie Conway’s shoulder injury has given Brisbane a pre-finals AFLW scare as the reigning premiers beat St Kilda by 27 points.

Conway was best afield, but was forced from the field in the last term on Sunday at Moorabbin in the 10.8 (68) to 6.5 (41) win a week out from Brisbane’s qualifying final against Hawthorn.

Kicking with the breeze in the final term, the Saints snared four goals and kept Brisbane scoreless.

That could well cost the Lions a home qualifying final, with Hawthorn in second spot ahead of their game later on Sunday afternoon against Richmond.

Brisbane went above Hawthorn on percentage during the match, but then dropped back to third.

The win also put the Lions in front for the McCelland Trophy and its $1 million bonus as the top combined AFL/AFLW club.

But if the Hawks beat Richmond, they will win the trophy and host Brisbane.

Conway had been outstanding until she was injured, kicking two goals and racking up 27 possessions.

Kicking with the solid southerly, Brisbane were too good in the first term and kicked four goals to one.

The Saints rallied with the only goal of the second term to be within 18 points at the main break.

Brisbane then put their collective foot on the throat, starting the third quarter with four goals in six minutes.

From there, the main focus was whether Brisbane’s percentage would put them ahead of Hawthorn on the ladder.

Bella Dawes and Ally Anderson also starred for the Lions.

Taylor Smith’s two goals in the first quarter drew her level with breakout Geelong forward Aishling Moloney on 21 as the league’s top goalkickers.

Jesse Wardlaw kicked three goals for St Kilda, while star onballer Jaimee Lambert had 22 disposals.
