Wicked stars Sheridan Adams and Courtney Monsma reveal secret before opening at Crown Perth

Stepping into the shoes of one of musical theatre’s most iconic characters in your first lead role is daunting, but Sheridan Adams has a secret *******.

When she takes the stage in the famous green makeup and ****** costume of Wicked’s Elphaba, she does so opposite friend and costar Courtney Monsma as the pretty-in-pink Glinda. Their bond, forged over more than 400 shows, was a source of strength for both.

Before the duo head to Crown Perth for the opening of Wicked next month, they took part in a special STM ****** and Adams told the magazine that their connection was one of “unspoken love and respect and admiration.”

Elphaba was Adams’ first major part after graduating from Victorian College of the Arts just before COVID shut down the industry. Monsma starred as Anna in Frozen: The Musical, and performed in shows including SIX The Musical at Sydney Opera House and the Australasian tour of Disney’s Aladdin.

Monsma said the pair clung to each other in order to tackle the weight of expectation attached to Wicked, a story set in the land of Oz long before Dorothy arrives, which had become the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history since its premiere in 2003.

“It’s the support that you need to get through this massive experience,” Monsma said. “It was very important for us to have that foundation because it’s such a big job.”

Adams said one of her favourite parts of the role was speaking to people at the stage door who were about to see the musical for the first time.

“I get very, very excited and I lose my mind a little bit, because I remember seeing it when I was 16,” she said. “I don’t like to tell people who haven’t seen Wicked too much about (Elphaba’s) journey, and her story, because I just think it’s so brilliant to watch it unfold in front of you.”
