Fangs on the Farm: Kate Mitchell’s children’s first aid show to premiere at Perth Zoo

Great Southern creatives will premiere an animation series at Perth Zoo to equip children with first aid skills.

Kate Mitchell and Bec Bignell will present Fangs on the Farm in November.

The show follows Darcy Dingo, Gracie Gecko, and Harry Hopperoo as they encounter and deal with tricky situations in a rural environment with confidence and resilience, first dealing with a snake ***** and the proper response.

It aims to equip and empower children in remote and regional areas with essential first aid knowledge and skills through brightly ********* and engaging illustrations and animation.

Producer Mitchell said she was inspired to create the series after spending time in hospital after her 16-month-old son Darcy was diagnosed with epilepsy.

Mitchell had to perform CPR on her son in February 2022, after he experienced two tonic-clonic seizures on their family farm in Narrikup.

“The idea came about from watching, listening, and reading about things I noticed when we spent so much time in hospital with Darcy,” she said.

“It was really interesting to have a conversation around people’s awareness of first aid, but also, as a teacher, the lack of relevant and relatable educational content for our kids.”

The show goes beyond children’s entertainment — it aims to address the lack of health resources and support available to regional and remote *********** families.

“Growing up in Hyden, I experienced firsthand the unique challenges faced by rural communities,” Mitchell said.

“I’m committed to creating educational content that’s not only informative but also relatable and engaging for kids.”

In production for a year, the creative team behind the show includes Kojonup’s Bec Bignell as writer, director, and producer; NSW’s Kate Rutter as illustrator, Margaret River’s Rikkili Clark as the show’s animator and Adrian Konarski, Isabella Key and Jessica Bonney as executive producers.

“I’m so fortunate to have some incredible friends who are talented in their professional fields, and Bec Bignell is one of those,” Mitchell said.

“It was clear when talking to her how we could have the biggest reach and impact in the regional areas through the magic of storytelling.

“The whole collaborative process has been amazing, and it’s been created by highly acclaimed film and television practitioners in regional Australia and Sydney.”
