How plogging keeps us in shape and protects the planet.

What if there was a way to exercise while doing good for the planet? Would you do it? An environmental initiative called “plogging” is increasing in popularity around the world is doing just that. Plogging is an eco-friendly activity that combines jogging with picking up litter.

The word was coined in 2016 by an outdoorsy Swede who began thinking about how joggers routinely pass by garbage outdoors during their routine cardio workouts.

blends the words “plocka upp, ” a Swedish word for “pick up”, and the English word for jogging. Plogging aims to exercise while cleaning up the garbage where you are jogging.

Plogging is a relatively simple activity. All that is really needed is a passion for cleaning up the local environment and the ability to stay on task, meaning scanning for garbage and picking it up relatively quickly to keep up with the heart rate.

Ploggers might carry gloves and bags with them to facilitate the pickup process. Some ploggers might pick up the garbage and put it in their pockets or waistbands, while others might jog until they find a bag on the ground that they can put the garbage in.

At the end of their jog, ploggers might separate the materials they find and put them in the appropriate waste receptacles. They might also take a photo of what they have found on their jogs and post them to social media to encourage others to take up plogging.

Plogging is important for several reasons. It helps clean up streets, parks, and natural areas by removing plastic bottles, wrappers, and other debris, reducing ecosystem pollution. Ploggers help protect

that might ingest or get entangled in discarded materials by removing litter. Some wildlife may also become entangled in larger debris like fishing nets, six-pack rings, or discarded bags, restricting movement and causing injury or ******.

By removing these hazards, ploggers directly reduce the risks to animals and help maintain healthier ecosystems. By collecting trash before it enters rivers, lakes, and oceans, ploggers help to reduce water pollution, contributing to healthier aquatic ecosystems.

Plogging also raises awareness about the extent of littering in local communities. Participants often become more conscious of the widespread problem, inspiring them and others to take action beyond the individual act of plogging. This can lead to broader community initiatives aimed at waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable practices, creating a ripple effect that amplifies the environmental benefits.

Plogging also combines exercise with a sense of environmental stewardship,

and the planet.  This shift in behaviour can inspire long-term change in communities, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability.

For those who are not big on jogging but still want to do their part in exercising while cleaning up litter, there are also plakers (a person who picks up garbage while walking) or a pliker (a person who picks up garbage while hiking or biking).

The beauty of plogging (or plakering or plikering) is that it can be as big or small as an individual would like it to be. It allows anyone—regardless of fitness level or environmental experience—to make a meaningful contribution to both personal health and the environment. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or someone new to

, plogging can be scaled to suit individual capabilities and lifestyles, making it a versatile and impactful activity.

get involved. Plogging proves that you don’t have to be an environmental expert or a fitness enthusiast to make a positive impact. All it takes is a willingness to care for the planet, one step—and one piece of garbage—at a time.
